Wappler a tool for artists?

Make yourself a coffee, turn on the computer, and put on your headphones. Your favorite playlist starts playing and you open Wappler. You have an idea, something that has to go out of your mind and through your fingers as you type. You feel the need to take it out of yourself and show it to the world, but you do not do it in a conventional way, but by programming. Programming is an art.

When we start a new project we are faced with a blank canvas, an empty file that needs to be edited, painted with code. It is the hardest part but also the most beautiful, that of laying the foundations of what will be our creation. The process that takes place from idea to product is impressive. Spend sheets and notebooks making diagrams, drawings, logos and brushstrokes classes, methods, loops and variables and then write them on the computer, execute, and see the work.

People tend to have a somewhat pigeonholed concept of art. Normally the exhibition of paintings or sculptures in museums is understood as art, but for me art is much more than that; it is anything by which something is expressed, whether in paint, concrete, light, or code. When we go to a museum and look at a painting, we see what the painter has done. When we are dealing with software from an open source project, we can also see how it has been developed, from the idea to the product.

There is a duality between the software engineer and the artist. A painting’s ultimate goal is to be observed; it has no practical use other than to decorate or make the observer think. However, a computer program is intended to solve a problem or need. Perhaps this is why many people do not consider programming an art, but the truth is that a lot of creativity is necessary during development.

When I say that programming is an art, I mean the evolution of the project. Escape from everything, get into a bubble that nobody can get you out of and be so focused on typing that you no longer even hear the music coming out of the headphones. You merge with the code and you create. Yes, believe. You don’t paint a canvas; You program and write code, a lot of code. You are hooked on the keyboard and you always carry your laptop in your backpack to snack even in the spare time you have. Without realizing it, you end up creating a work of art. It is true that some are better than others, but the beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.

And you? Do you consider yourself an artist?

TOTALLY!

Beautifully put, Max. :art:

Depending on who I meet, I sometimes call myself an artist, and then get into a deep discussion about the depth of creativity that app design brings…

Thanks for your feedback Antony, you have a good point of view there. Yes, it is true, each tool brings different possibilities for creativity. Personally, I think that Wappler, as far as application development is concerned, is the one that gives the most opportunities to be able to use creativity as it does not have many barriers in place, such as the freedom to edit your own code and adjust it to your liking. The price of this freedom is that the deeper you go in the “rabbit hole” the more custom code you must use and learn, but Wappler makes it much easier to learn new things and try to implement them to achieve your goal.

Combine my love of art and code, have done pieces of code as pieces of art, on a train I once wrote a JavaScript function, BIG H1 tag pieces, Queries, all types of things! Code is definitely an art form, aesthetics, thought, expression!

If you liked this topic and have some time, be sure to watch this presentation by Dylan Beattie, it is more than great.

Absolutely, I have had a similar experience several times since I was programming in Basic when I was 10 years old and it is one of the reasons why I love what I do.

Maybe one day we should open an art gallery where each QR code guides the visitor to a github repository where they can appreciate and enjoy the syntax of a well done script  :slightly_smiling_face:

I find the two mix really well Max. Like yourself I started early, pretty solitary as a kid, that’s why I love graff too. It’s in a tin until you put it on a wall, code is similar, its on a keyboard until you construct those keystrokes in to something that then exists. We shut down our gallery when we moved to Portugal but still paint here now and again, mostly trains and rooftops these days (and the occasional abandoned industrial unit like above).

Your graff art is so cool! thnks for share @Dave , I always admired people who can express themselves through painting, it is incredible to see when you work and simple lines take shape and color.

I’m bad at drawing, but I express my artistic needs through music (i play the guitar) and photography, but to be honest, between the motorcycle trips I do, my family and work, I have done very little lately.

Now that with my wife we are expecting the arrival of our first child, I am going to spend more time and teach him how important it is to express ourselves artistically, whether through painting, music, etc. So as I don’t know what he will like, I bought new guitars (for children), a piano, pencils, paints, etc. so he can explore a wide range of possibilities, we’ll see which one he chooses.

Wow man, congratulations to you and your lovely wife! Exciting times for you ahead. Admire anyone who can play an instrument. Love photography myself but my wife is now bang in to it. She loves it too. Great hobby and real privileged here as our surroundings are stunning. Amazing the talents in this community, and the willingness to share them. Sometimes it's as if we have all met up in the real-world. Hopefully when all this nonsense is over the Wappler guys can organise an event we could all try and attend. Would be epic to meet everyone.

Thank u so much for your kind words Dave! :fist_right: :fist_left:

Where are u from?

Amazing talents Indeed, I remember the first time I came to this community I saw that the vast majority spoke only about the problems using Wappler on a day-to-day basis and gradually I discovered many interesting people with incredible stories. I always say that what I value most in any community is the ability to share and help each other.

100% agree with you, It would be great and a privilege to attend a Wappler event where we could meet and chat in person, real-world contact is really missed this days.

And if one day you pass through Buenos Aires, let me know, I have a fairly large white wall in my house waiting for some work of art  and many beers or even better wines from Argentina. :grinning:

They need to add Artist to the poll.

My parents would be pretty disappointed if I told them I consider myself an artist after them sacrificing things until I was able to prove to a stranger that I could resolve np-hard problems in C and Java :joy:

Do you also follow the Jeff Delaney channel? He is a cool guy, the 100 seconds videos are great.

Well, you can tell them that you are both, a software engineer - artist and that they paid for only one degree but you graduated "in two"

I am a big fan of the guy. I find him quite entertaining. I consume everything from his channel.

About my parents I believe that’s a lost battle. Poor fellas! When they ask me what do I do for a living and if my education is helping I only got one answer for them: “it’s complicated” :joy:

You can try to explain them by making a video like “What do i do in 100 sec”, that would be a challenge.

Lol. Not a bad idea. At all! I’ve tried to explain dozens of times so I could automate that part

Am from London but for the past ten years have lived in Portugal, various areas around the country, now in Central Region up in the clouds.

I concur entirely Max!

I missed out when the Wappler team came to Lisbon previously for an event and was gutted. Hoping there will be a next time soon as all this C19 shiznit calms down.

Man that is just teasing! Some excellent writers around your region and the style is different to most other places. Get yourself in to a paint shop and ask around, you'll soon find someone to oblige that offer Max. Writers are among the most interesting people I've ever had the pleasure of associating with. Lots of stories. Buy them a couple of tins of paint, tell them what you want, within twenty minutes they'll throw it up! Quite a fast paced activity due to the nature of hitting up spots where you just can't hang around hehehe....
