I finally have this working! 
Final step was as simple as choosing a specific emulator in Wappler (I had it set to ‘any’). For some reason the Pixel 3 AVD isn’t working but the Pixel XL is. I can’t see any difference so no idea why but I’m just thankful I’ve got something up and running!
