Just curious as to what the purpose of this mode is for and when would you use it?

This feature has been requested a while back and as Ben shows on his screenshots, it turns on/off App Connect in Design View so data bindings and the rest of dynamic stuff are not rendered or executed.

Very useful if your pages have Security Provider based authentication. Allows you to work on the pages without using a work-around that was previously required to do so.

I use it quite often when I have regions that are displayed/hidden based on dynamic data. It lets me access the normally hidden regions through the regular UI.
I have to admit, however, that I discovered it’s use by accident.
