Payment Providers

Hi all, we are looking to change payment providers soon (we use Trust Payments in the UK). Does anyone have any recommendations for a reliable UK/EU payment provider? What are you all using out there?

I looked at Stripe as they are inclusive to the Wappler environment but was severely put off by their dire Trustpilot reviews so I’m looking for an alternative.

On that note, is Wappler planning to have integration with other payment providers other than stripe?

Stripe is a great payment provider, our own business is based on Stripe. It’s much better than PayPal in terms of functionality and support.

+1 for Stripe too. Our main UK business has been running on a mix of Stripe and PayPal now for 6 years with no issues. I have 12 other sites all running purely stripe, again no issues with those accounts either.

We’ve offered PayPal as an option in addition to Trust Payments (they used to be ‘Secure Trading’) for about a decade now but don’t use it a lot - it’s mainly for customers who would rather pay via paypal than actually using a card or CNP transactions. We have full merchant facilities with our current provider but their fees are no longer acceptable.

Thanks for the Stripe comments but according to other customers it’s a horror show: https://uk.trustpilot.com/review/stripe.com

Is there anyone else here using a provider other than Stripe…?

Try Mollie, I’ve checked their API, seems simple to implement

+1 for Stripe. Good support, good options for testing, full integration with Wappler, cheapest rates that I’ve seen for UK.

@sitestreet
Stripe charge:
1.4% + 20p
Paypal charge::
1.2% + 30p

Paypal is the cheaper option.

@Apple
thank you, that’s very interesting. I’ll take a deeper look at that, it looks appealing as they also do SEPA DD transactions which is beneficial as we could also ditch our current SEPA supplier.

Currently I’m looking at Paypro.nl
not decided myself yet which I am going to use though.

If you look at the Better Business Bureau for America Stripe gets ripped with awful tales.

So in the Stripe complaints someone said they were going to try Square, instead – but, according to the BBB – just as bad.

https://www.bbb.org/us/ca/san-francisco/profile/credit-card-merchant-services/square-inc-1116-370609/customer-reviews

The most common complaints for both are 1) suspending a relatively new account that already passed their approval process. Feelings from complainants that both companies wait for transactions to bring cash in & the notify the account holder that they have closed the account and are holding on to the money paid for the delivered product.
2) Once they notify you of some unfair, ludicrous decision that may come out of the blue even if you think things are going smoothly in day-to-day transactions – you are done. Money gone. If you retain a lawyer you are likewise ignored in trying to get explanations or justice.

The complaints I read at Trustpilot on Stripe remind me of the Elon Musk days of PayPal.

We now rely on services dealing with our money that are essentially untouchable & use AI algorithms to “make decisions”
Real people who actually have power to resolve unfairness are way above the authority level of any live person on the phone – if you ever get one.

Quite a few of the Praise reviews for Stripe and Square sound suspiciously sourced.

The more AI takes over the whole realm of “Customer Service” the more helpless clients will be.

I’ve had problems with Stripe when paying Wappler which initially triggered me to see how they are reviewed elsewhere. @Apple suggested I take a look at Mollie and that’s the best option so far that I’ve found. I’m currently looking for more UK based alternatives before I make my final decision.

As payment providers are a big part of what a lot of us do, it’d be great if Wappler supported a number of other payment options for those of us that really don’t want to use Stripe or any others that have bad reputations with customers.

No German that I have talked to knows of Stripe or any of the other payment provders mentioned.

They buy goods out of the UK market all the time online.
Germany was way behind in accepting Credit Cards, to begin with. And now Paypal is the service “standard” online in Germany

Stripe supports all the European banks and payment methods like sofort, ideal, SEPA and much more.

So the customers are really seeing their bank directly and nothing from stripe.

So that is why they don’t know stripe but it is used as custom solution everywhere.

So my German business people are asking Why use Stripe or any other service for online services payments?

I tell them it probably has a lot to do with the convenience factor for small businesses or one-person online shops.

I haven’t used online transaction providers for years.
But I remember that with Paypal problems one of the big disadvantages was just getting approved to get a Credit Card service provider. It was set up more for bricks-and-mortar businesses that had a physical address and years of business relationships, etc.

I assume that Stripe, for instance, is more flexible for online payment service and that it also processes more of the credit cards & alternate payment protocols.
