While i will be adding DeepSeek to the "Wappler all in one AI" extension any day soon (in the interests if completeness) I certainly dont recommend it's use!
For those interested,i believe i am demonstrating the extension at the next meetup if you care to join me.
I don't think it is any different to any Western big tech companies practice (if it has any grain of truth to it which I very much doubt it has). They all share and harvest your data. Why people make a big thing of Chinese companies doing the same is a little bewildering? It is no different with Open AI, Anthropic, Google, Facebook, Alibaba, or the hundred other A.I commercial providers/developers. Its us as Users who need to protect ourselves and take measures to insure what they do collect is as vague and obscure as can be.
On the flip-side the false narratives of the West are by design. DeepSeek is a real threat. They want to mitigate that threat with the use of propaganda. Personally I wouldn't read past the title of the article and I certainly would not trust Sky News! They are an agent of the State and no doubt about it. I'd worry more about them than DeepSeek!
We the people are the product... Fact of online life I'm afraid.
Personally RT for a news overview. But then if you're not on a VPN they won't let you even visit the site which says a huge amount. Otherwise just ignore the international news and tune out of it. Just stick to your local news outlet.
I'm going to send you a link to a video from a Sky News piece Ben. Will message you it privately.
People walk around with a smartphone which is listening to them and sending the audio back for analysis to target advertising. Most are plotting your locations. All are digesting your habits and storing that data on a drive somewhere to be interpreted and then used in nefarious ways. Even your PC and laptops are doing this... But that is just fine as long as China don't do it. And if they do then it must be bad and they are out to get us all. Run for the hills!
The hypocrisy of the matter is astonishing!
Great thing is DeepSeek will release even more powerful OPEN SOURCE models you can FREELY download and run YOURSELF on your OWN hardware (air-gap if you prefer). So lets wait and see if Open AI and Anthropic do the same...
The difference is who ultimately has the data. A private company vs a nation-state that severely cracks down on dissedents or anyone that speaks against their rulers. The only way I would run DeepSeek is locally. But at the current time, to get anywhere near the power/speed of ChatGPT, you need a pretty expensive system. If OpenAI or others start to raise prices it might become cost competitive, but I don't see that currently.
Unfortunately... Even when it's paid you're the product Very little of services don't use your information or data..
Speaking of security, since it's been mentioned in the last update about AI integration, maybe Sidecar by Codestory could be something interesting to check out. The AIDE IDE code editor was based on it. It's been discontinue few days ago, due to feature requests and bug fixes, and the market is tough just now when you take into account Copilot releasing their agent, curson, windsurf etc. Sidecar has the ability to connect various LLM modules including the local ones, it was like god's sent throughout the last 6 months that I've been using it.
If it wasn't written in rust, maybe could have been something integratable?
